11/15/2023 0 Comments Fuel surge tank plumbing![]() This tank has 3 lower fittings for twin pumps plus a drain fitting. Usually 1/8 NPT or 1/4 NPT fittings are used but AN type fittings can also be used depending on your plumbing preferences. Threaded bosses are welded to the top and bottom caps or sides as in the example below. A long tank allows any trapped air to rise to the top so it does not enter the high pressure pump. The tubing is usually 2.5 or 3 inch diameter and. 5 to 1 liter in capacity, made from either steel or aluminum tubing. Usually only one fitting is used on the bottom of the tank for feeding the high pressure pump. Most tanks will have three fittings on the top, one for feed from the low pressure pump, one for fuel returned through the fuel pressure regulator and one for the return back to the main fuel tank. The schematic below shows a common setup: (click for larger image) From here, if the surge tank is full, fuel is returned back to the main fuel tank. Fuel not used by the engine is returned from the rail, through the fuel pressure regulator, to the top of the surge tank. The fuel gravity feeds into this pump and goes to the fuel rail. A high pressure EFI pump will be mounted below the surge tank. Often the stock electric pump can be used. Fuel is piped to it by either a stock engine driven mechanical pump or a low pressure electric pump. Usually the tank is mounted in the engine compartment. The surge tank stores a small amount of fuel for the high pressure pump to pick up if flow from the main tank is interrupted for any reason. This is also useful on many stock EFI cars which have poorly baffled tanks. This is necessary if the two fuel pumps will be staged. To convert some carbureted vehicles to EFI, we recommend fitting a fuel surge tank to avoid fuel feed problems, especially during hard cornering. There is also 20-0463 which retains the Bosch check valves (see picture above). This is a machined aluminum 4-port manifold (shown below) that merges the fuel pump outlets together into a single AN fitting. All required fittings are included, along with -8AN and -10AN outlet adapters. When plumbing a single hose to the engine, Radium Engineering offers 20-0063. This enables all of the fittings to be secured to the top cap making for a nice compact plumbing package. This FST includes pickup tubes that draw fuel from the bottom of the FST.Įach pickup is dedicated to the respective external fuel pump. The top port is used for the fuel return back to the main tank.Ģ0-0021-00 Fuel Surge Tank, Dual External Bosch 0 580 254 044, Vertical, Pumps Not Included The 2 fuel pump pickups are located at the bottom of the FST. Hose-ends and E85 compatible hose is included to connect the pump inlets to the surge tank ports. This FST is only 4 inches tall which is ideal for many applications. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH AEM 50-1005 or DW350iL pumps.Ģ0-0052-00 Fuel Surge Tank, Dual External Bosch 0 580 254 044, Horizontal, Pumps Not Included To purchase Bosch 0 580 254 044 fuel pumps, click HERE. Unlike others on the market, these clamps conductively transfer the fuel pumps thermal energy to the chassis increasing fuel pump longevity. The anodized 6061 billet aluminum clamps and FST mount directly to the powder coated aluminum plate using stainless countersink bolts. ![]() This is an excellent fueling solution for vehicles installing large demand power upgrades such as forced induction.īoth of these dual-pump configurations are ideal for high powered V or H configured engines with dual fuel rails. The surge tank also provides a quick and easy way to upgade any standard fuel system with a compact size. Excess fuel in the surge tank is returned back to the vehicle's main fuel tank. This volume is maintained by the main fuel tank's pump as well as the fuel returning from the fuel pressure regulator. The volume of fuel inside the surge tank acts as a buffer to always keep the FST pump supplied with fuel. The FST fuel pumps feed the fuel rail(s). SEE TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR MORE INFORMATION.Ī fuel surge tank (FST) is designed to prevent fuel starvation to the engine on vehicles with inadequate fuel tank baffling.
